Anchor points are usually specified around the equipment itself - which class, which rating, which manufacturer. Far less attention goes to the substrate the anchor is actually installed into, and that's where a surprising amount of South African installations quietly fail to meet the standard they're claimed to meet.
The substrate assumption that doesn't travel
Standard chemical anchors are engineered for solid, in-situ cast concrete of an adequate strength class. That assumption holds reliably for concrete. It does not hold for South African brick wall construction, which is typically single-skin or unfilled cavity brickwork without the composite structural strength that some international pull-test data assumes. An anchor that would be perfectly compliant bolted into concrete can be a real liability bolted into brick without engineering sign-off confirming the substrate is actually suitable.
Why this is easy to miss
Visually, a correctly installed non-compliant anchor and a correctly installed compliant one look identical. Both are bolted in flush, both have the right hardware, both might even carry a manufacturer's test tag. The difference is entirely in whether the substrate was actually assessed by someone qualified to do so, and whether that assessment was documented - not something a walk-past inspection reveals.
Steelwork isn't automatically safer either
Fixing into structural steel carries the same principle: the design and installation should be verified by a qualified engineer rather than treated as a standard drilling job, because steel members vary widely in what load they can actually take at a given fixing point.
What we actually do differently
Before any anchor goes in, the substrate gets assessed as its own step, not assumed from the building's age or general appearance. Where that assessment flags brickwork, an unusual steel section, or anything else outside a standard concrete installation, it gets referred for engineering sign-off before installation proceeds, not after. That sometimes means a longer lead time or a harder initial conversation about cost - both are cheaper than finding out at audit that a whole run of anchors needs re-doing.
What this actually costs
Beyond the obvious safety risk, a non-compliant anchor discovered during an audit or after an incident typically means a full re-assessment of every anchor point on the site, not just the one in question, because the same installer likely made the same substrate assumption throughout. That's a far more expensive correction than getting the substrate assessment right the first time. We won't install into a substrate that hasn't been properly assessed, even if it means a harder conversation on day one - it's cheaper than the alternative.
